Does Your Ink Tank Printer Have a Replaceable Maintenance Box?

It won't decide a purchase on price alone. What it does change is what an ink tank printer actually asks of you over its life. The same page's compatibility list runs 40 rows long, but several of those rows list the same model twice — once per color, or as a straight duplicate — which works out to 36 distinct models once you collapse those, across three product lines: EcoTank (including the ET-4950, ET-3950 and ET-2980), Expression Home (XP-5200, XP-5100) and WorkForce (WF-2960, WF-2860 and the ST-series). A separate Epson reference page listing ink cartridge and maintenance box part numbers for the WorkForce WF-2960 names this same T04D1 box for that model, which matches the T04D1 page's own list. If your candidate model is on that list, T04D1 is the part number to search for when you eventually need one.

How to check your own model, in one search

1. Find your printer's complete model number, including any letter suffix, on the unit or in its settings menu.
2. Search Epson's site for "[your model] maintenance box," or check the supplies/accessories section of your model's own product page, the same place that lists its ink bottle or cartridge numbers.
3. If a maintenance box part number turns up naming your model, note the part number and its current price — that's a real, recurring line item.

Why light printing doesn't exempt you

It's tempting to assume a maintenance box only fills up from heavy use. No single Epson page states outright that the ET-2850 has no user-replaceable box; this is a pattern across several of Epson's own pages, not a direct quote. If you own or are considering an ET-2850 and eventually see a full ink-pad message, treat resolving it as a question for Epson support rather than a part you can order, and confirm that directly with Epson, since this page did not find an Epson statement describing that exact process.

Traps to watch for

• Model suffixes matter. Epson's compatibility lists are per exact model number; a name that's one digit or letter off, such as ET-2850 versus ET-2850U or ET-2851, or WF-2850 versus WF-2860, is not proof of the same part — Epson's own lists put the WF-2850 on the C9344 box and the WF-2860 on the T04D1 box. Search your printer's complete model number.
• A maintenance box is not an ink bottle. Both are consumables on a tank printer, but Epson tracks and sells them separately — check the ink bottle number for your model too, not just the maintenance box.
