The short answer

Both LC3033 and LC3035 fit your printer if it's one of these five: MFC-J995DW, MFC-J995DW XL, MFC-J805DW, MFC-J805DW XL or MFC-J815DW XL. Brother's own product pages for the two cartridges list that identical set of five machines, for the black cartridge and for the cyan, magenta and yellow versions. The two listings you found weren't disagreeing about what fits your machine — LC3033 and LC3035 are two different page-yield tiers of the same INKvestment cartridge line, not a case where only one of them is actually correct.

The difference between them is how many pages you get before you replace the cartridge, not whether it fits the machine. LC3033 vs. LC3035: what actually changes

Brother sells ink for the MFC-J995DW family in two INKvestment Tank capacities: LC3033 (Super High Yield) and LC3035 (Ultra High Yield). Both are genuine Brother cartridges, both are listed by Brother for the same five machines, and both go in the same cartridge bay. What changes between them is how much ink is inside, and so how many pages Brother declares before the cartridge needs replacing.

The jump from LC3033 to LC3035 isn't a flat doubling. Black goes from 3,000 to 6,000 declared pages — exactly twice as many. Each color cartridge goes from 1,500 to 5,000 pages, which works out to a little over three times as many, not two. Does Brother call them interchangeable?

Not in those exact words. Brother doesn't publish a line stating that LC3033 and LC3035 are interchangeable. What its own pages do show is both part numbers accepted in the same place: Brother's support article for the 'Cannot Detect Ink Volume' message on these machines tells the owner to install a new, unopened, genuine Brother INKvestment Tank LC3033 Super High Yield or LC3035 Ultra High Yield cartridge, naming both, for the same error, on the same machines. That, together with the matching compatibility lists on each cartridge's own product page, is Brother confirming fit for both — it just isn't one sentence promising the two are equivalent.

What Brother doesn't tell you is which one to buy, because that's a volume question, not a fit question. LC3035 is rated for roughly twice the black pages and over three times the color pages of LC3033. LC3033/LC3035 is one of several Brother INKvestment number pairs, and the neighboring numbers look close enough to cause the same kind of mix-up you started with — except across these lines, the machines genuinely don't overlap. A cartridge from the wrong family isn't a lower-yield option for your printer; it's a part Brother doesn't list for your printer at all.

The starter-cartridge trap

If this is your first replacement and the '3,000' or '6,000' figure already looks off, that's expected. Brother's own page for the MFC-J995DW states that the ink cartridges shipped inside a new machine are starter cartridges, and their actual yield is about 75% of a replacement LC3033-series cartridge, because part of that first fill goes to initializing the machine's ink delivery system. The declared yields in the table above are for the replacement cartridge you buy later, not for what came in the box.

What ISO/IEC 24711 does and doesn't tell you

Every page count above is Brother's own declared estimate under ISO/IEC 24711, the standard for testing inkjet cartridge yield at 5% page coverage on letter/A4 paper. It's a standardized test, not a promise for your own documents — a page that's mostly a photo or a dense chart uses more ink than a page of text, so your real count will differ. It also isn't comparable to a laser toner's page count: Brother's toner cartridges, including the TN730, TN760 and TN770 used in its laser printers, are declared under a different standard, ISO/IEC 19752. An inkjet cartridge's ISO/IEC 24711 number and a toner cartridge's ISO/IEC 19752 number are measured differently and shouldn't be set against each other directly.

What to check on your own printer

• Confirm the exact model name on the printer's front panel or in its network/status menu. 'MFC-J995DW' and 'MFC-J995DW XL' are different SKUs in Brother's system, even though both take the same LC3033/LC3035 ink.
• Decide whether you're replacing black alone or a full set before you buy — the yield jump from LC3033 to LC3035 is about 2x for black but over 3x for color, so a black-only reorder and a full-set reorder aren't at the same ratio.
• If the display shows 'Cannot Detect Ink Volume,' Brother's fix is the same regardless of tier: a new, unopened, genuine LC3033 or LC3035 cartridge.
